Feminism has absolutely not gone far enough yet, or at least it hasn't achieved enough yet. As a gay man who grew up often being tweeted with disdain because I was "too much" like a woman, I'm intimately familiar with the toxicity of male supremacy. After all, pretty much every traditional gay slur is a slur that compares a man to a woman. Which is obviously something no real man would wish to be. Cough.
It doesn't help the situation that respected religious institutions and leaders constantly preach that God approves of sexism and sexist roles.
Did you see the fury that Pope Francis incited in Belgium a couple weeks ago? A Catholic university invited him to give a speech on some important anniversary of theirs.
He showed up and lauded women for being nurturers, for being mothers and sisters.
The university itself rebuked him. So did the political leadership of the nation and even the king.
Did that do anything to sway Francis's sexist views? Not in the slightest. On the plane back, he called his critics "obtuse."
All the while, a great Church conference is going on, described as one of the most important synods in the history of the Church.
And what did Francis do before the synod began? He put equality for women firmly off the table. He dictated that the synod will not be allowed to make decisions about that, even as he insisted that women must never hold clerical offices in the Church.
When people even suggest that, most priests and bishops absolutely lose their shit. It absolutely infuriates them to consider that any woman might be their spiritual equal or even a superior.
But then, I guess it doesn't come as any surprise to anyone that the Catholic church is a disgusting institution. We queer people are well aware of what a disgusting piece of shit Pope Francis is.
While he was busy insisting that sexual equality may not be considered at the synod, he was also firmly putting queer equality off the table. He insists that the doctrines that hold us to be (literally!) “depraved” and “disordered” must not be reformed, will not be reformed.
He had already firmly stomped down any possibility of such reform in the German-speaking world and in Belgium, where grassroots pressure to change the church's sickening homophobic doctrines is very strong.
Then, a few weeks ago Francis ripped his mask off and leered, twice in 2 weeks getting caught instructing other priests and bishops that gay men must not be admitted to the seminary to train for the priesthood, because there is "already too much fagotry in the Vatican."
That's what sexism gets you, it gets you disgusting pigs like Pope Francis whom the world reveres, even though he's a homophobic f****** monster.
Millions of children around the world learn from their Catholic catechisms everyday that we queer people are morally inferior and broken. And the Catholic Church absolutely refuses to stop treating us like shit.
It's because of sexism, because of disgusting sexist pigs like Pope Francis and most of the rest of his evil priests and nuns. (I’m always bewildered when women are sexist pigs TOO!)
With religious pressure like that, it's even harder for feminism to raise women up to be treated is equals to men, and we queer people suffer too.
No, feminism has not gone far enough. We all have so much more work to do, including battling and defeating pigs like Pope Francis.
