The odes certainly reinforce the idea some scholars have that the earliest Christians saw themselves as something of a cross between an esoteric sect of Judaism and practitioners of a traditional Mediterranean mystery cult (e.g. Eleusis) with all their associations of music and ecstatic spirituality.
