Just as an historical aside, and not that it matters a great deal to the point of what you’re writing, but when the Moral Majority pivoted from Bob Jones and segregation issues, it wasn’t just abortion that motivated them and set their agenda. They turned a sharp focus also on anti-gay issues, politicizing churches to support Anita Bryant’s anti-gay crusades. The anti-gay issue crystallized their political power aspirations.
