Facebook’s entire ethos of community standards with respect to LGBTQ people is absurd.
The community standards do not mean what they would appear to mean on their face. Facebook allows constant disparagement of transgender, gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Reports do not get acted on, almost ever.
When a popular lesbian singer from Lebanon committed suicide about a year ago, thousands of comments were posted on Facebook memorial sites to her — comments calling LGBTQ people like abominations, saying we deserve death, and all sorts of things like that.
Facebook left all those comments up, despite the fact that hundreds and hundreds of people mass reported them. I led a campaign on the English speaking side of Facebook in conjunction with a campaign being led on the Arabic speaking side. We solicited enormous amounts of reports, and got articles published in popular press and all sorts of things.
Facebook refused to act.
Facebook managers are vile people who take no action against the most blatant anti-LGBTQ behavior on their site.
I don’t know how they interpret the plain language of their standards to allow this kind of vicious behavior, but they do it every single day of the week.
There is a reason people hate Facebook so much. And I’m supposing it’s because the people who run it are awful people.
