Excellent points! I often wonder why people talk about queerness not existing before a certain point in history when Western colonial powers persecuted queerness ruthlessly when they encountered it — starting many centuries ago.
See also, the European colonization of Polynesia, something I've been reading about lately. Christian missionaries from Europe and North America were ruthless about suppressing what they saw as "sexual depravity" among Pacific islanders.
They largely succeeded in stamping out queerness as well as relative sexual freedom for women.
