Ever since I can personally remember, strong pressure has existed within LGBTQ communities to redefine the boundaries of "normal" or "acceptable."

"We're the good queers, almost but not exactly like you. You'll get used to us, especially when you see how different we are from the "bad" queers, particularly when we help you see we loathe those folks as much as you do."

I could have written the above about elitist, heteronormative gay men like Andrew Sullivan, James Kirchik, or most of the membership of the Log Cabin Republicans. But it applies as well to certain of the crossdressing critics you're writing about.

It's human nature to ostracize those who are different. The better angels of our nature recognize the harm in that, try to keep us on a path of acceptance, on an embrace of the diverse richness of humanity.

When we ourselves empower the shamers, ostracizes, and other-ers, we aren't just on the wrong path. We are actively harming ourselves.
