Even though people probably regard me as a niche LGBTQ current events writer, I gained a significant initial following on Medium with a work of serialized fiction that became very popular. I wrote it because I wanted to, not because I was looking for ways to become popular or gain followers.

I don't know if that could happen again, because Medium algorithms today supposedly don't favor fiction. (I don't know if that's true, I'm just repeating what I've heard.)

But my point is write what you want, write a lot. Eventually, if you're going to have a niche, it will find you. And when it does, you'll know, because articles you publish outside it will receive only a fraction of the readership of articles you publish inside it.

And even then, you should probably try to keep up a little diversity to keep different sorts of followers interested in your stories.
