Dogs were once traditionally scorned in parts of the Middle East, and still are in places. It's a cultural thing. It's interesting that conservative Christians have no trouble dismissing cultural scorn of dogs as irrelevant to life here and now, while digging their heels in on other, far less clear, ancient cultural matters.
