Didn’t you hear? The Christian nationalists who now dominate the Republican Party claim that separation of Church and State was always an invalid idea. Sounds like a joke, but it’s not. Right-wing ideologues claim without apology that the United States was founded as as Christian nation (it wasn’t) and should go back to being one. They love the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment, but can’t stand the pesky Establishment clause.
