There are two separate stories developing here, narrated in different voices for reasons that won’t become entirely clear until the end, or nearly the end, of the novel.
Readers will probably draw some conclusions fairly soon about who this boy might be in terms of the story David is telling. There’s an important clue in this chapter, however, that might leave them scratching their heads if they think about it.
A reader once told me I’d made a mistake with a detail here. Then she reached the unexpected conclusion of the book.
“Oh! Now I get it,” she said.
