David and the Lion’s Den chapter alert!

David and the gang are eating lasagna and drinking Barolo as they get together to listen to more of his writing about the models who died. Today, we meet Marco and his mom, a gracious, elegant Nuyorican who doesn’t seem very ill with HIV. Could the clue they’re looking for be found in this sad tale of a mother lost too soon?

Author’s Notes:

I based Marco and his mother on the little family that lived down the hall from Lenny and me in Chelsea. My neighbor didn’t have HIV, but she was a single mother raising a son, and she made the world’s best roast pork and black beans. Marco grew up to be loyal and devoted to her. A good kid all round. I feel bad about killing off his mom, even fictionally. But at least I didn’t make her a serial killer.
