Cruelty for ideology’s sake, Sam. I can’t know why the State Department chose to appeal this, of course. But I know they’ve chosen not to pursue cases involving straight couples in identical situations.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a hardcore evangelical protestant (of the white variety, obviously) who has pursued a hardline religious approach to his duties since he joined the Administration.

Last year, he overturned the longstanding policy of the United States to discourage the persecution of gay men in Africa, framing the matter as one of “religious liberty,” and then he lied about the details of the new policy.

Cruelty, indeed.
