Could not agree with you more! "The Shadow of the Wind" is one of my favorite novels, and one reason I may work on my Spanish so I can read it one day in the original. Brilliant and gorgeous.

I did not know the author started his writing career in the YA genre. That actually makes sense given how I've always though the very beginning has something of a YA flavor or sensibility to it.
