Coincidentally, a colleague of mine who helps administer a large LGBTQ support group on Facebook just went through something similar. Yesterday evening, a member of the group said some really awful things about trans kids, all the usual stuff about how it’s a fashion and they’re just vying for attention.

She stepped in as the mother of a trans child to try to defuse the situation with stories from her own personal experience.

But the guy just got more and more hostile. She absolutely became a target for his ignorance. I couldn’t understand why he would say such hateful things when she’s just putting herself out there as a loving mom, as a fellow vulnerable human being.

When he would not relent, we removed him from the group. I don’t understand people like that. They’ve made up their minds to hate classes of people, and they don’t want to hear anything from anyone that counters their narrative.
