But it isn’t exclusion. HOP has invited GOAL to participate as a contingent out of uniform and without their guns. GOAL has refused the offer.
They are not being excluded, they are being told that they cannot (certainly unintentionally) march in uniform and spread the pinkwashing message that everything is okay between the NYPD and queer people.
Everything is not okay. The NYPD is a fundamentally racist, brutal police force, which is why coalitions of Black and Latinx queer advocates in New York City are demanding that the NYPD have zero official presence in events, not even in a visible crowd control capacity.
The NYPD is going to have to earn its way back by reforming itself and rooting out the brutal racist cops who are beating and otherwise oppressing queer people of color in the streets of New York City every single day of the week.
Queer people of color are certainly correct to demand that the organization that is brutalizing them be excluded from what is actually their own event and not that organization’s event.
But that would not stop GOAL cops from participating if they wanted to cooperate with HOP and queer people of color.
GOAL cops are not excluded, their guns and uniforms are.
