Buffy Fetrantino just reminded me of Freud's "narcissism of small differences," and I thought of a Twitter exchange I saw this morning. One of my Twitter followers had promoted an article I wrote about political persecution of LGBTQ people. In his tweet, however, my follower typed LGBTQ+, a difference that I frankly didn't even notice.

Somebody did, however, and tweeted a whole thread about the problem with the differences in label. They seemed honestly quite emotionally caught up, really laying into the tweeter.

I found that really ironic, given that the subject of my story is Republican politicians doing really bad things to queer people. But instead of focusing on that, at least one person wanted to fight about terminology.

I think that's what Freud was talking about.
