Back when I was a gay teenager and young man, people often objected to homosexuality by saying that young people got recruited into it before they had a chance to experience sex with the correct-gender partner. They would say things like all a lesbian needs to get her act together is hot sex with a good man. Adults would literally talk about how teenage boys needed to have sex with girls or women so they wouldn't go wrong.

Creepy as fuck? You bet! When I was 18, a family friend sent me to a prostitute thinking that would "cure" me.

This isn't exactly the same as what you're talking about, but it's the same creep factor and it's analogous enough that I thought I would bring it up.

Oh, by the way, medical bankruptcies are a pretty big problem in the United States with our dysfunctional healthcare "system," but a bigger problem is people dying because they can't afford medication. Worth mentioning.
