I’ve spent a lot of time lately writing for young people, mostly LGBTQ adolescents and young adults.

One thing I’ve noticed is that people often get caught up with labels, as if figuring out the label will help them decide or even define who they are.

I like to say that the thing itself is more important than the label for the thing.

I dream of a day when it doesn’t make any difference who we fall in love with, who we have a fling with, who we settle down to spend blocks of our lives with.

I dream of a day when all that matters is to be human, and not a human with a sexual orientation label.

As to that phrase “fag hag,” I don’t care for it either, and I don’t use it. I do have women friends though who seem to enjoy wearing it as a proud badge. Sort of in-your-face reclamation.

If it works for them, I’m all for it, of course, though personally I cringe a little if I have to write it or say it.
