As I wrote yesterday in an article about the Supreme Court decision, we now live in a country where a mother would have to break the law to help her 12-year-old daughter end a pregnancy caused by incest or rape.

Several states have old laws banning abortion even in the case of incest or rape, and those laws are now back in effect. Right-wing Christian legislators say they want the laws to work that way, and a couple new laws passed in anticipation of Roe falling lack rape/incest exceptions, on purpose.

I don't for a second understand how any Christian could think that's a good idea. But that's where we are right now.

Back to your David and Goliath theme, I don't know if you're aware of this, but several Jewish organizations in the United States are objecting to abortion restriction laws on religious grounds, noting that their faith and ethical traditions affirmatively support abortion when necessary to protect well-being.

I would suppose they hold as much or more claim to the David and Goliath story as anyone. And they're saying their concept of God and their understanding of ethical love are being done a grave disservice by the ongoing conservative Christian culture war.

But then, it's very uncommon to hear Jews militarizing religion. It's especially uncommon to hear them use the Torah glorify violence in the name of religion.
