As I was just mentioning to David Wade Chambers the other day, positioning the story of Sodom as an anti-homosexuality narrative really is outright lying.

It isn’t possible to be trained at even a conservative theological school and understand the Sodom narrative as a condemnation of same-gender sex. It’s just not there. (Hell, it’s not there for the average reader who just looks at the text. Somebody would have to tell them the text is about condemning homosexuality for them to think it is.)

Scholars know it’s not there and for the most part don’t try to push it anymore.

But that doesn’t stop conservative church leaders doing it anyway, even the ones who know better.

They’re lying. On purpose.
