As I have written in the past, the situation in the United States is not as positive as it looks on the surface. While it’s true that many states have banned conversion therapy for minors, each of those state bans contains an explicit or effective exemption for religious practitioners.
Given that conservative Christians in the United States are about the only people who wish to have anything to do with conversion therapy, those religious exemptions have meant that the numbers of people undergoing conversion therapy have not shrunk.
In fact, conversion therapy is seeing an upsurge here, as Catholic dioceses get into the business. The Catholic Church has traditionally opposed conversion therapy, but in the United States at least that is changing rapidly.
