As a sort of secondary line of thinking here, we could observe that conservative Christians who oppose abortion on Biblical grounds do not have historical accuracy on their side. Abortion isn't mentioned at all in the Old Testament, though historians tell us abortions certainly happened in the period of time the Old Testament was written. The lack of religious opposition is notable.
As to the New Testament, things are much clearer, at least as far as Christianity goes. We know herbally induced abortions were common in the Hellenized Mediterranean world Jesus and his disciples were born into, yet not one of them ever mentions abortion or even obliquely refers to abortion. It's almost like they didn't care. At all.
In the face of that apathy, it's pretty hard to construct rational arguments that abortion ought to be of signal importance to Christians. They've made it so anyway, but we should remind them from time to time that history and Biblical teachings are not on their side.
