As a fiction writer, I think writing dialogue is maybe the most fun anybody can have outside the bedroom. But it isn't simple! (Is anything worthwhile simple?)
I loved following along with you here and seeing your thought processes, thinking about how they align with my own when I'm writing dialogue.
I've taken a few creative writing classes, but I learned a couple things just now that I didn't know. I didn't know the term "beat," though I understand and use the principle. Now I know what to call it! So, yay.
I also didn't know the four-line rule of thumb, though I'm always careful to use as few tags as possible, and to be careful that my reader isn't going to get lost.
It's nice to be able to have a number to think about as a default.
Thanks!
