As a diagnosed autistic person myself, I'm really seriously unamused by this presumption that autism must be a serious disability and that people with autism can't know ourselves.
As a kid who grew up during a time and in a religious environment where being gay was considered disgusting and uniquely morally reprehensible, I was able to recognize myself and push back against baseless societal repression.
I'm convinced that being autistic helped me reject religion and other societal bullshit that tried to force me to be somebody I wasn't. I think lots of autistic people have that particular superpower, and I think that's what scares some people.
We're more likely to resist their bullying and other techniques to try to force conformity. And that's put them into a panic.
Well, let them panic. We're going to work together to build a better world whether they like it or not.
