Another hero worth mentioning here is James Baldwin, a Black gay man who wrote courageously about racism and homosexuality during an era when such a thing was very daring and dangerous to a literary career.

Baldwin is a hero in queer circles. More than one gay bar has been named "Giovanni's Room" to honor the title of one of his books.

Queer folks remember Baldwin as both Black and gay, both identities being intrinsic to who he was and what he wrote.
