And white people knew this! I was born in 1962, so so I witnessed a lot of his cultural change up close and personal.

A lot of what I saw from fellow white people was very unpleasant. Many white people in my life, including people who would have sworn up one side and down the other that they were not racist, mocked and despised afros.

“Look at that guy! What does he think he’s saying with that hair, anyway? It’s just ridiculous!”

The thing is, they knew exactly what “that guy" was saying. That’s why they didn’t like his hair.
