And there is at least some reason to believe Douglas helped Lincoln to evolve. They spent time together personally, and some historians say Lincoln learned a lot from Douglas about the innate equality of Black people, enough to change some of his earlier ideas.

No one can see into Lincoln’s heart, so nobody can know if that’s true. But we can know Douglas acted out of love. His words glow with love as they come down to us.
