And the Republican Party is more than happy to go along, to throw red meat to their base.
Republican politicians crucially need working class votes to win office. This could be a huge problem for them since the Republican Party strongly pushes laws and policies that hurt working class people, who don't have the same standard of living as when I was born and raised.
So how do Republicans deal with that uncomfortable problem?
Well, if you are Tim Scott in Virginia, you run for governor on the platform that transgender and gay people are "filth" and "abominations."
That's demagoguery of the worst sort, but demagoguery often works.
