And lest we forget, the tale of Sodom was an allegory reinforcing the idea that one must be hospitable to outsiders. Old Testament writers wrote explicitly about that principle, and Judaism has mostly always read the story of Sodom that way.
It's interesting to me that traditionalist Christianity twisted the story out of all recognition by making it about condemning and hating queer people.
I think right-wing Christians in the United States today could do very well to dive into the original allegorical meaning of the Sodom story.
If they truly believe God passes judgment on nations, they might wish to consider that mistreating the stranger has been a consistent indicator of impending judgment in many works of the Bible, Old Testament and New.
