Anti-trans attitudes among white, evangelical Protestants and conservative Catholics are constructs of control that have been pasted on top of the plain meaning of the texts, in a process that took centuries, and which upholds the interests of a white, patriarchal ruling class.

The ostentatious gender diversity of the ancient Mediterranean world didn’t shock the Hebrew prophets, Jesus, or even apparently Paul. A careful reading of the texts we now possess reveals that they thought the matter so unimportant that they didn’t even mention it, let alone think to condemn it.

Quite the opposite of what many contemporary religious leaders teach.
