And in a way, this homogenity club even hurts many white men. Because not all men are part of the old boys' club. One of the reasons a lot of big publications hire white men is because they hire people specifically for their networks and connections rather than for their talent or potential.

A lot of it is even institutionalized, with plum internships (one of the few paths to a real career) handed out only to people with the means to live in an expensive place like New York City without a real income.

We fool ourselves if we think big-time journalism is a meritocracy or that talent rules entry to the club.

Women and people of color are routinely excluded because the system was never built to consider them in the first place. And the men who rise to the top tend to be men who were born with the right connections.
