And by 1990 in New York City, that particular distinctive look was often referred to as "Chelsea Clone," referring to the neighborhood immediately uptown from Greenwich Village. Lots more gay men lived in Chelsea than the Village, which is smaller and which by then had already become rather unaffordable in terms of rent.
