An effect that sailors know all about as they refer to the latitudes near the equator as "the doldrums." It doesn't make a lot of difference for large ocean-going vessels of course, but sailing vessels have to be careful to have plenty of fuel for their diesel engines when crossing the Pacific, because trade winds are notoriously fickle in the doldrums.
