Amen! I would emphasize the somewhat in “somewhat better" and caveat with geography. Gay youth in high school in many parts of the United States, for some reason particularly gay boys, often still feel so much stigma and that they suffer from a lot of mental health problems, including a very significantly increased risk of suicide.

Part of this may owe to the fact that gay boys disproportionately transgress gender norms, behaving in a stereotypically effeminate manner sometimes.

And as transgender girls and women know all too well, violating gender norms like that can be ruthlessly punished by peers.

Which is all the more reason teachers should be reading books to expose kids to the ordinary differences of the human gender and sexuality spectrum.
