I thought of that as I read your story, because my late husband lived in that neighborhood before it was razed. The population was largely Black and Hispanic. Robert Moses described it as "the worst slum in New York" and bragged, "We cleared it out." (It was not a "slum." It was a neighborhood of tenement buildings where working people like my husband lived.)
