All of that is interesting, except it doesn't have anything to do with human identities.
My point is that since religious belief is a choice, and it clearly empirically is — because we see people choosing different religious beliefs constantly — then religious belief doesn't qualify as the same category as ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, etc.
I agree that some people have claimed to choose different sexual orientations, primarily Christians who were pushing conversion-therapy programs.
Practically without exception, they have all admitted that they were lying. They could not actually choose a different sexual orientation.
I've never seen evidence that anyone can choose their sexual orientation, and I might have to reevaluate my position if I ever came across such evidence.
I'm pretty sure I never will, but anything could happen.
