Moon Over Berlin is taking the Duty Train out of Berlin in the latest chapter.
This is it, guys. D-Day, H-Hour. Time to smuggle Dima to the West! But can he pass for an American on a troop train? And where the hell is Juliette?
Some people don’t realize that West Berlin was surrounded by East Germany, the city being much closer to Poland than to West Germany. One way to get in and out of the city was to take the daily Duty Train, free to military personnel and their families. It departed Berlin late every evening, arriving in Frankfurt at the crack of dawn. I rode it many times, usually at the beginning of an adventure. Frankfurt was the main transportation hub of West Germany at the time, and arriving at the main train station was about as exciting an experience as I could imagine. From the Frankfurt station, all of Europe was available!
Why is the gang taking the train? With Mark acting as their “officer in charge” (OIC), nobody will examine Dima’s paperwork closely. At the airport, Dima would have been subjected to closer scrutiny.
