After what happened at BYU last week, the story has particular resonance. LGBTQ students held an off-campus vigil praying for and asking for tolerance, and they were swarmed by a mob of profanity-spitting, gay-slur shouting Mormons, many of them students at BYU, and many of them openly armed.

The confrontation received widespread press coverage around the world.

It's highly likely that incidents like this will discourage people from joining or remaining in the LDS Church. Decent people don't like being associated with that kind of hate and violence.
