"According to one staffer for a California Democrat, “There’s a joke on the Hill, we’ve got a great junior senator in Alex Padilla and an experienced staff in Feinstein’s office.”

This is illuminating in more ways than one. It speaks to the fact that a U.S. senator isn't just a person or a political office. She's a power center, the focal point of a web of jobs and influence, an inertial force highly resistant to change.

Senator Feinstein isn't just Diane, she's hundreds of people who are part of her machine, directly or indirectly. They aren't going to give up power and influence without a fight.
