Absolutely, ... depending on how you define the word transgender. Many young people who identify as non-binary or gender fluid, and who are not interested in medical or surgical treatment, call themselves trans. (I say this from many years of direct personal experience associating with queer people of all ages.)

And that does create some communication barriers sometimes, especially among people for whom the very idea of queer is objectionable on its face. The biggest problems come in when people intentionally exploit the definition semantics by trying to create an artificial sense of urgency about young people "mutilating" or "sterilizing" themselves.
