Absolutely! I lost my national security career in the 1980s because I was gay, which at the time was a disqualification for holding a security clearance. That didn't change for many years, even after some queer people were officially allowed to serve in the military.

I lost my New York City co-op apartment after my partner died, because we were legally unable to marry, and because the co-op agreement specified that only married partners could inherit.

That apartment is worth a couple of million dollars today, a sum of money that would be life changing for me!
