Absolutely, Geoff Pilkington!

While I have been paid for writing, and will be again, my paid efforts represent the merest sliver of a slice of the bulk of my work.

I write every day, prolifically and passionately. If I expected to be paid for all that, I’d be bitterly disappointed, but if I didn’t do the work, how would I hone my craft?

Being new to Medium, I’m puzzled by all the people who put their work behind the pay wall, even though they apparently have very few readers.

I’m not sure what the purpose of that is.

I’m by no means a successful author (yet) but I do have a literary agent and some history of publication.

Her advice to me is to always publicize, always build readership, always work on a base of people who would want to buy my book when it’s released.

So at least for me, hiding my work behind a paywall seems counter productive.

Sure, I’d love to be paid one day.

Mostly, though, as a writer, what I crave is to be read.
