Absolutely! I just came back from a rather depressing dive into Twitter, where I encountered a couple threads where apparently tens or even hundreds of thousands of people are absolutely convinced that illegal immigrants are destroying Springfield and eating cats. They're adamant!

Once the right-wing fear mongers put the stuff out there, a certain element of their base are going to believe it one way or the other, evidence notwithstanding.

That's sure happening right now, even though Springfield municipal leaders say they're grateful for the legal-immigrant workers from Haiti who are helping to revitalize the city economy, and who insist that the cats of Springfield have never been more safe.

And speaking of immigrant workers, everybody I'm running into who's pissed off about them presumes they're just outright illegal or that they are refugees without status.

That's no more true than the cat thing, but people are still screaming about it, because of people like JD Vance.
