A particularly pernicious idea holds that human beliefs are neutral things and should be neutrally respected, regardless of the content of the idea. We see this become hugely problematic when the idea is about hurting minority groups of people.
Philosopher Karl Popper, rather more famous for his philosophies of science and the scientific method, addressed the toxicity of hurtful ideologies in his Paradox of Tolerance, in which he observed that societies that tolerate the intolerant fall inevitably into authoritarianism and fascism.
